Stop dolphins being caught in nets!

Here is a dead Maui’s or Hector’s dolphin caught in a fishing net. It makes me want to cry. Because when fishing nets are trying to catch fish, they accidentally also catch Maui’s dolphins. Fish are Maui’s dolphins’ food and they are getting caught in the nets when they are trying to get their food or when they're just swimming along. This is also called “bycatch.”

The reason why they are dying in the fishing nets is because they can’t get out and they can only stay under the water for 2 ½ minutes. Dolphins are not fish. They are mammals and they need to breathe air just like you and me. This is a cruel and sad thing and the New Zealand government is not doing their job to protect this from happening.

Help me put pressure on the government so they will say they will help.

On April 13th I met Pete Bethune at a hotel. I was nervous at first but it turned out to be really cool.

In case you don't know, Pete Bethune is a famous conservationist. He invented his own speedboat and went around the world in 60 days (a world record!). He is going to have a new show called The Operatives about saving marine animals. And I got to see one of his episodes. I showed him my letter from the New Zealand Prime Minister Nathan Guy. I talked to him about the Maui's dolphins. Here is a picture of Pete Bethune and me (and my sister) with my fundraising poster.

 

I learned to not be one of those cruel people out there in this world. I may be small but I can make a big difference. Won't you help me save the Maui's dolphins?
